The Mischievous Art of Jim Flora

The first collection of Jim Flora's album art. In the '40s and '50s, Flora designed dozens of bizarre, cartoonish, diabolic cover illustrations, pulsing with angular hepcats fingering cockeyed pianos and honking lollipop-hued horns. He wreaked havoc with the laws of physics, conjuring up flying musicians and wobbly dimensional perspectives. Yet Flora's childlike exuberance was subverted by a sinister tinge of the grotesque. The book contains most of Flora's known covers (around 50), plus rarely seen illustrations, some of Flora's commercial work, and more. Softbound, color. "Jim Flora's surreal images are visual jazz. They're very cool." -Gary Baseman. "Flora did it like nobody else." -Shag.
