Kamon is a pop culture icon that's unique to Japan. Whether they are found on warrior's armor, helmets or banners, on kimonos or even tombstones, these tiny markings have been used by all. It was Keiichi Tanaami who first had an eye for reinvigorating the tradition. Since the 1960's he has gathered world wide attention for his radical and stylish visual expression of bold colours and symbols. Kamon is a family emblem, in Japan, which is used to indicate one's own family history, blood line, lineage and standing from ancient times. The origin of Kamon can be dated back to the latter period of Heian Period, in which court nobles came and went through Miyako-oji (Main street of Kyoto), proudly showing their own family emblems on the side of their elegant carriages drawn by cows.
