A Postcard Book of Japanese Colors

Tracing the origins of the colors that characterized different periods of Japan's pre-modern history, we can touch the intellectual and aesthetic sensibilities of those bygone times. Most traditional Japanese colors are taken from plants and flowers, and each conveys a sense of its particular season. Those names are splendidly diverse. What we simply call "green" includes an astonishing number of named colors, such as miruai (the deep green of miru seaweed with an indigo tone), wasabi-iro (the soft green of Japanese horseradish), wakatake-iro (the yellowish emerald of new bamboo), and so on.These elegant colors are integral to traditional Japanese culture, and can still be found today. This hardbound postcard book features 24 postcards, each featuring a Japanese print showcasing these colors, with a brief description on the back of the color's history and meaning.
