Tenugui, rectangular gauze cloths usually made of cotton and used as handtowels, handkerchiefs, headgear and other coverings, were already in use in Japan in the eighth century, and are products of a specialized craft that is alive and well today. Designs used in tenugui are widely varied, using motifs of traditional culture, seasonal festivals, fashion, sports, kabuki, and social situations. This book collects 420 well-designed examples of tenugui, produced between the 1870s and the 1940s.
