97 Years Lava

97 years Lava is the third title to be published in the ?New Dutch Graphic Design Series? using the tried and true formula of showcasing leading Dutch graphic design bureaus and lots of their work. Lava's reputation is partly based on its very successful innovative work for magazines such as OOR, Blvd and Man. However, Lava has done much more than just design magazines. The book is jam-packed with work of amazing spontaneity which immediately catches your eye and not a grid in sight. The photos of work projects start on page one and continue to the very last page, annotated only with brief captions. This says a lot about Lava's way of designing: spontaneous, daring and always innovative. Avoiding the trap of becoming a static design bureau, Lava prefers instead to be a showcase for talent. That's why the book is called ?97 years Lava?, not because Lava is the oldest design bureau in Holland (they?ve been around now for 13 years), but because when you add up the office years of each Lava designer, now and in the past, you end up with a sum of 97. 97 years of talent, blood, sweat and tears geared by an attitude of former formula one racing driver Alain Prost, who is quoted as saying, ?When you think you have everything under control, you?re not driving fast enough?. An apt saying that Lava still uses as a letterhead.
