The Development of Western Type

For his thesis, Frutiger came upon the idea of writing on well-sized paper with water-soluble printing ink. He had a carpenter finish birch tablets letter-sized in height. He polished and dampened them and then affixed the paper with the letter towards the wood. Afterwards he put it through a copper printing press with the letter becoming clearly visible on the wooden tablet as a mirror image. Adrian Frutiger's thesis work was published by the Association of Swiss Educational Book Printers for use in education and instruction. This publication is a facsimile print from 1996.
