Looking at the work selected for issue 1 of Graphic magazine we were surprised by how ?personal? it felt, which gave us the idea for our next issue. In issue 2 we set out to explore the relationship between the personal & the professional.
The responses we received were varied. From Romandson (ex Tomato Interactive) going around taking pictures of the contents of their friends? bags, pockets & desks to Neasden Control Centre's obscure ?holiday? pictures.
We also interviewed architects as we thought that their own personal vs professional conflict was interesting - it involved designing other people's houses, offices, etc, as, for instance, in the case of this collector commissioning a building designed to accommodate his large collection of contemporary art together with his chickens!
We found another interesting dilemma with the subject of our profile Philip Hunt, creative director of London based animation studio: Studioaka (ex Aka pizzaz, the studio responsible for the animated Orange ads). How do you run a company (with more than 20 directors and offices spread over 5 floors) while at the same time developing interesting work?
We thought that the personal vs professional issue also raised the question of authorship in visual communication (particularly in design and advertising), which is what we set out to explore in the conversation. We asked The Designers Republic founder Ian Anderson to talk to elusive London based designers Mike & Rebecca. They came to the conclusion that Damian Hirst was a great graphic designer!
Other features include:
Vince Frost on designing books, magazines and soap packaging.
Fashion label Silas on commissioning great art.
What is Magazine Culture?
Message to America: A series of political posters (each with a different message to America) commissioned by designers Spin.
A visit to Speakers Corner (a hothouse for self expression!)
And work by a variety of international artists, designers, graphic designers, fashion designers, photographers, architects, etc.
